Gravesend, NH is not a real place, but John Irving based it on his hometown, Exeter, NH. I visited Exeter a few days ago. Everyone I spoke to knew the story, and they were more than happy to show me the places where Irving set his novel. In the photos you will see churches, baseball fields, Gravesend Academy (aka Phillips Exeter Academy) and more!
